"This magnificent
production is an important and challenging piece of theatre.
As honest a piece of drama as one could hope for"
The Sunday
Telegraph
"This
adaptation is breathtaking... it is what every play that describes
itself as "wide-ranging" aims at, but only a few
actually achieve"
New Statesman
"A welcome
revival of a serious, compassionate, hard-hitting play"
The Sunday Times
"The surprise
is that it should be so gentle, fired not by anger, but by
a profound belief that for everything bad in human nature,
there is a multitude of good things too"
The Guardian
Following a sell-out run in 2006, Tamasha's
evocative dramatisation of Rohinton Mistry's Booker shortlisted
novel returns to Hampstead Theatre next month before touring
to Southampton and Birmingham.
India,
1975, and a callous government has declared a State of Emergency.
In these uncertain times, Dina Dalal - a spirited
widow determined to avoid a second marriage - takes a student
boarder and two tailors into her ramshackle flat.
Yet as the Emergency's forbidding policies
bring chaos to the city, the four strangers - whose lives
have become inextricably linked - find themselves crossing
divides of caste and religion to form the most unexpected
of friendships.
Through arresting visual imagery, an evocative
score and an ensemble of eight actors, Tamasha
(the award-winning company behind East is East) vividly
captures an astonishing moment in India's history with a tender
story of exceptional human spirit.
