Ayub Khan Din, writer of East is East

Intensive, fully-subsidised training for
eight aspiring British Asian playwrights

Tamasha is one of the UK's leading producers of new writing by British Asian playwrights, and the award-winning company behind productions like East is East, Strictly Dandia, A Fine Balance and The Trouble with Asian Men.

Tamasha New Writing is an intensive two-week course which seeks to develop the artistic individuality of its participants. You might be a young, aspiring playwright wanting a bridge into professional employment, or an established artist looking to develop your skills in writing for theatre.

Three of the eight participants from last year's course - Satinder Kaur Chohan, Avaes Mohammed and Raman Mundair - went on to receive bursaries from Tamasha to develop their writing further. A fourth, Emteaz Hussain, was offered a full commission as a direct result of her participation on the course: Tamasha will be producing her debut play, Sweet Cider, in the Autumn.

Here is some of the feedback from last year's participants:

"Fantastic two weeks. Felt very privileged to be part of the workshop and I know it will influence the way I approach all aspects of my work."

"Doing the Tamasha writers' course has really helped me to regain my confidence and to re-awaken my creativity."

Run in partnership with the Conservatoire for Dance and Drama, the course this year is hosted at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in central London.

As one of eight successful applicants, you will benefit from:

Training in our distinctive research-based approach to playwriting, as you explore a range of techniques and methodologies with our creative team, including Artistic Director Sudha Bhuchar, and playwright/director Philip Osment
Guest Lecturers, sharing their own approach to writing and research, including Stephen Jeffries, Kwame Kwei-Armah and Louise Wallinger, a key creative on The Trouble with Asian Men
Individual mentoring to help you develop your own voice
Theatre trips to a selection of current productions

Professional actors to use to workshop ideas

"The Backyard and Beyond" - a platform event with a panel of invited writers, including Tanika Gupta. If we write from where we are, how do we reach a wider world?
Networking opportunities with industry professionals at a presentation event at the end of the course
Membership of Tamasha Developing Artists, giving you access to a range of training, networking and employment opportunities

Free to take part

This full time course is offered free to successful applicants, and you will receive a weekly allowance towards lost earnings. In addition, participants from outside Greater London can also apply for a reimbursement of relocation expenses.

How to apply

No formal qualifications are necessary to apply for this course. Applicants must, however, be able to demonstrate a strong desire to pursue a career in writing professionally for theatre, and be of South Asian background.
