The laboratory will explore the relationship between the actor and director and is designed to be a creative space to allow for shared learning and give actors and directors an opportunity to explore Kristine Landon-Smith’s theatre practice by working together.
Actors will work with Tamasha’s Artistic Director, Kristine Landon-Smith to explore her unique actor-centred model; focusing on pre-learnt speeches, extracts from both classic and Tamasha’s texts, improvisation and how she encourages the actor to ‘play’. Directors will observe Kristine working with the actors on text and improvisation and then create their own improvisations with the actors based on what Kristine has uncovered from the actor. Tuition will be entirely practical and each director will learn by interacting with their own cast of actors under Kristine’s guidance. This will be complemented by feedback and advice sessions.
Participants will benefit from:
- learning techniques for communication between actors and directors
- connecting and collaborating with other artists and exploring ways of bringing their own individuality and cultural background to their work
- sessions with guest industry speakers. Past practitioners have included Lee Simpson (Improbable), Sacha Wares, Amit Lahav (Gecko), William Trotter (voice), George Perrin (Paines Plough), and Bijan Sheibani (Associate Director, National Theatre)
- a free theatre visit for all participants

COST:
Laboratory cost: £110 (equivalent to £22 per day)

In addition, bursaries of up to £125 each towards relocation costs for those outside of London are available for 3 of the places. If you would like to apply for one of these please make this clear on the data form.
N.B. The actual cost of the workshop is £440 but Tamasha is offering 75% subsidised places to all participants.
HOW TO APPLY:
Please note – this opportunity is open to artists from all cultural backgrounds and you do not have to be able to speak other languages.
Actors will have an interest in:
- actively pursing a career in professional theatre
- exploring an approach to acting that engages the totality of the actor: their personality, culture and background
Director applicants will:
- be actively pursuing a career in directing and be able to demonstrate a track record
- be particularly keen on exploring how the director works with the actor
- exploring an approach that engages the totality of the actor: their personality, culture and background
Applications must include:
- A CV with contact details of two referees (including a headshot for actors)
- a statement of interest detailing why you are interested in this particular opportunity (max. 1 side of A4)
- A completed Data Form and Equal Opportunities Monitoring Form (see below)
