Vacancy: Assistant Director Approaching Empty


Tamasha, Kiln Theatre and Live Theatre are recruiting for an Assistant Director for the UK tour of our major new co-production, Approaching Empty by Ishy Din, and directed by Pooja Ghai. 


The Assistant Director will be involved for the entire rehearsal period and production week in London (3 Dec 2018 – 12 Jan 2019), followed by get-in, technical rehearsals, and previews up to press night in Newcastle (4 – 6 Feb 2019), and then will accompany the company at get-ins and events at key tour venues around the UK (25 Feb - 13 Apr 2019).

The Assistant Director will also support the delivery of audience engagement activities on tour, such as leading post-show discussions with the cast and director. 

Aim of position 

The Assistant Director will support the Director (Pooja Ghai) and the Approaching Company during rehearsals and previews with the realisation of the Production as well as overseeing the show on tour and the delivery of participation activity such as post-show talks or workshops as required by the schedule.  

Commitment

  • Approximately 43 days across a four-month engagement
  • Full time availability during rehearsals and previews at Kiln Theatre, London (3 Dec 2018 – 12 Jan 2019), and rehearsals and previews at Live Theatre, Newcastle (4 – 6 Feb 2019)
  • Attendance on the UK tour (5 Feb – 13 Apr 2019) to be agreed with the Director and Producer in line with the tour schedule and Director’s availability

Responsibilities 

The Assistant Director will:

  • Support the work of the Director in rehearsals and on tour, contributing to the rehearsal and creative processes
  • Provide general assistance to the Director throughout the engagement 
  • Oversee get-ins at venues across the UK tour, ensuring the production is appropriately placed in venues to maintain high artistic standards
  • Support the company whilst the play is in performance as agreed with the Director, including noting the production on tour
  • Attend post show and ‘meet the cast’ events where required during the tour 
  • Attend Production Meetings where applicable 
  • Assist the company in documenting the rehearsal process for the purposes of marketing, archiving and evaluating the project through blogs, social media and other forms as agreed
  • Liaise with Tamasha throughout the engagement, ensuring high levels of communication relating to any production-related developments or concerns 
  • Act as representative for Tamasha on tour
  • Any further duties as required by the Director

Essential skills

  • Self-starting, looking after the production on tour – confident during get-ins and showing initiative as required
  • Confident to act on behalf of the Director in her absence, working to maintain the integrity of the production with the actors, and being comfortable about speaking in public when required
  • A team player, collaborator and a proactive, organised, hard-working individual, working closely and supportively with the actors and other colleagues
  • Sensitive in giving notes to actors if required, and to other colleagues needs and pressures, with the ability to keep calm under pressure and act with discretion

Desirable skills

  • Able to demonstrate that you have a good understanding of and a particular interest in telling culturally diverse stories 
  • Some experience of audience engagement and outreach activities, though this is not obligatory

Fee

£3500 to include creative meetings, attendance at rehearsals, attendance during the production week, attendance at press nights, and attendance at an agreed number of the tour performances.  

There is a separate allocation towards travel and accommodation when attending tour performances.
