New Writing
“Tamasha’s commitment to new writing is fundamental in ensuring that we continue to hear new and exciting voices from every corner of the Asian community”
Ayub Khan Din, writer of East is East
New writing continues to form the bedrock of Tamasha’s work, and we commission new and experienced writers throughout the year. We support the development of new writers in the following ways:
Development Commissions
These bursaries provide writers with the resources to work closely with Tamasha’s creative team in order to develop a new idea into a first draft.
Tamasha New Writing
Part of the Developing Artists programme, Tamasha New Writing is an intensive two-week course which introduces participants to a variety of writing and research techniques. More >
Three participants from Tamasha New Writing 2006 - Satinder Kaur Chohan, Avaes Mohammed and Raman Mundair - went on to receive Development Commissions to develop their writing further. A fourth, Em Hussain, was offered a full commission as a direct result of her participation - her play Sweet Cider was produced by Tamasha at the Arcola Theatre in October 2008.
Since then, Satinder, Avaes and Ishy have all been offered full commissions - to read more about these works-in progress click here.
New Writing Platforms & Start Nights
Since 2007, Tamasha has curated a number of new writing showcase events presenting rehearsed readings of works-in-progress by writers currently working with the company. Stay up-to-date by joining our mailing list.
How to Submit a Script
We will consider scripts for possible development or production, which are consistent with the Company's mission.
Writers new to the company are advised to make contact with the Artistic Directors by email before sending in any material. We will only accept hard copies of complete scripts sent to the office address - not excerpts or synopses - and we do not accept television, film or radio scripts. We will return all scripts, providing a self-addressed envelope with sufficient postage is enclosed. Please note that the entire script consideration process may take 4-6 months.
