“First plays don’t come much better than this. Kristine Landon-Smith directs with an impeccable sense of social comedy, full of embarrassment, hilarity and pain.”

East is East (1996)

by Ayub Khan Din

Set in Salford in 1970, this hysterical but often moving play of mixed-race manners tells the story of the Khan children and their battle between the traditional values of their Pakistani father and their own desire to be citizens of modern Britain.

East is East marked a defining moment in Tamasha’s history.  The play received critical acclaim, and is often cited as playing a key role in bringing Asian culture into the British mainstream.
