About Propeller

Propeller is a four-week project which brings together over 30 artists to workshop and develop four new plays currently under commission by Tamasha.

Led by Tamasha’s Artistic Director Kristine Landon-Smith, Propeller offers its particpants structured training, one-to-one mentoring and a professional, well-resourced setting in which to develop their own individual styles.

Kristine’s role as a director is primarily concerned with the actor. She views a director’s job to be to make the actor ‘good in action’ in any piece of work, be it scripted or devised.  Her approach engages in depth with the actor as an individual, and focuses on how to bring the actor’s personality, culture and language to their work.  Central to her practice is the reinforcement of how to ‘play’ well together.  Participants will work on how to bridge the gap to text work without losing the spontaneity and pleasure of improvisation.

Stage One: Workshop (15 – 20 Feb 2010 / Graeae, Bradbury Studios, London E2)
A workshop / training week for 4 directors, 2 designers and 13 actors to work with Kristine to learn about her unique actor-centred approach, and to explore the collaborative relationships between director, actor and designer. The designers will work on an initial exploration of design ideas, mentored by Sue Mayes.

Stage Two: Rehearsals (8 – 19 Mar 2010 /  St Gabriel’s Halls, Pimlico, London SW1)
The director-designer teams will collaborate with an ensemble of professional actors over a two-week rehearsal period to further develop and produce the four pieces in a professional context.  As well as working directly with the writers, they will continue to be supported by Kristine, Sue and dramaturgs Sudha Bhuchar, Philip Osment and Lin Coghlan.

Stage Three: Showcase (22 – 27 Mar 2010 / Gate Theatre, Notting Hill, London W11)
The project culminates in a week of small scale, work-in-progress performances at The Gate from Mon 22 – Sat 27 March 2010.  Tickets for the showcase are available now.
